 Archived to Dec 31st 2017

In Memoriam ; Alan Seabrooke, a long standing member of Chesham Broadway Club, passed away a few days ago. He was a respected and well known member of the County, both under the old Bucks Bowling Association as well in BBA. Funeral details from Tim Baldwin if you require.

A second long standing member of Broadway has also passed away this week.

Mike Fletcher had worked very hard to get the new Club set up. It is sad he will not be here to see it up and running. He belonged to several other Bucks clubs before he joined Broadway. As Match Fixture secretary he worked hard to arrange the many fixtures from many different Clubs for Broadway.

Lastly, Vera Webb who was a long-serving member at Burnham has also passed away.

NOTE ; Remember that the Indoor matches through this Spring are under review following the poor response to the Autumn games, and the first one in the card, against Watford on Jan 18th will be cancelled. Watch this space for the decisions on the other venues.

Meanwhile.... REMEMBER that the Friday night SHORT MAT fun evenings in the village Memorial Hall, resume at 19.00 on January 12th.

ALSO, the Monthly Social and games mornings in the clubhouse hope to resume on the third Wednesday in January, (17th )

NOTICE, For those of our members who will remember her, the death has been announced of Chin Holden , past fixtures Secretary at High Wycombe and with the VPs. Her funeral has been arranged for Friday Jan 19th at 11.30 at Amersham Crematorium, and afterwards at High Wycombe Bowls Club.

We have been advisd that Rosemary Roberts passed on just before Christmas after a relative short stay in Stoke Mandeville Hospital. Rosemary had been a very active member of Cheddington BC since the late 1980's, and Ladies could know her as the organiser of Cheddington's annual Ladies Gala for many years.

RESULT ; The second and final of our round-robin games in the Handy Cross Shield was played on Saturday 16th Dec, and although we lost to Wycombe Chestnuts, we won on one triple to improve our position in the draw for the Quarterfinals . Well done to Rose, Colin and Tim Baldwin, and hard luck to the other two teams, who produced a good all-round performance, and particularly to Janice, Joe & Tony Batkins who were leading only to be pipped on the final end. Bobbie, Liz and Rob Kirby, came back strongly in the second half but it wasn't enough to overcome an experienced Wycombe group. The quarterfinals will be drawn after the final games on Jan 6th.

100 Club ; The November draws produced the following winners ;

£25 Ian McLeod

£15 Shirley Taylor

£10 Lisa Miller

RESULT ; On Wednesday 29th we played away against Foxhill IBC, and enjoyed a friendly game, which was close on four of the six rinks, though we finally managed only two wins, going down by 82 - 124 overall. Thanks to our opponents for providing one player to replace a late withdrawal (get well soon Maggy), and our top Rink was John Anderson with Flora Alderton and Denise Rogers.

REMEMBER ; The Dinner and Presentation evening this Friday at Harewood Downs Golf Club. We look forward to seeing all members who have signed up, with arrival from 7 o'clock and hoping to sit down 7.45 - 8.00.

We are sorry to have to report that member Graham Cooksley died last Saturday (November 18) after a short stay in hospital. He was found unconscious with a head injury, assumed to be the result of a seizure, and did not recover.

His funeral was on Monday November 27th at 2.30 pm at Westfield Road Cemetery, Harpenden AL5 4HR , and was attended by a group of members from the club.

RESULT ; Well done to our team in the Handy Cross Shield, who played and won their first game , against Hazlemere, on Sunday Nov 19th. This competition is between outdoor clubs who have players at Handy Cross and we have 9 members, all of whom played this first game. We won two triples out of three, and by 47-25. Top Rink was Rose Kirby, Colin Richards and Tim Baldwin, (20-4) but all players can take credit for a good all-round performance. The current status can be found on the following link; update 1.pdf

URGENT Amendment ; The Christmas Card exchange and Social Morning is on December 9th, as announced at the AGM, and not as incorrectly recorded here earlier. Apologies to anyone who is affected by this correction, and we hope to see as many members there as can make it.

NOTICE: Please note the Desborough match has been cancelled due to our lack of people available to play. The Foxhill match is now listed and all who put their names down are playing.

AGM ; The club AGM was held on the morning of Nov 4th, the minutes from which will be circulated to members in due course.

Key decisions were as follows ;

  • The subscriptions will go up by £5 to £95 in 2018
  • The club will no longer offer full Teas after weekend matches but will adopt a policy of nibbles to accompany drinks, regardless of the policy of our opposition on their return home games.
  • Restricted membership will only apply to existing members at the end of their playing careers, rather than be open to new members.
  • The members were asked for an opinion on a proposal that the Three Counties league move from 5 Rinks in 2018 to 6 triples in 2019, and this suggestion was endorsed by a good majority of those present, and this view will be passed back to the TVL organisers who will collate the views of all member-clubs.
  • The 2018-9 winter schedule of fixtures against indoor clubs will be revised since there is not enough interest in some fixtures to make them viable.
  • The club has been advised by the BB, that the Vi Trundell competition will move from Rinks to Triples in 2018 on a two-year trial basis.
  • The Burnham Plate will remain as one Rink, but to be played home and away over two years. The details will be revealed at the BBA AGM shortly.
  • The President and committee for 2018 was ratified, as all positions were nominated as advertised, and all were un-opposed.
  • The position of Treasurer is now unfilled, but a solution is being worked on and members will be advised in due course.
NOTICE ; We have been notified of the death of Margaret Ramage who died on Friday 27th Oct 2017. She had been a member of the club for many years and joined short mat when she was unable to bowl outside. Her funeral will be at Amersham Crematorium on November 16th at 2 o'clock. (Details added 4th Nov 2017)

Result: We played Watford IBC Sat 28th Oct and unfortunately we were out-bowled and lost on all 5 triples by 49 -141.

Letter to members ; The attached link is to a note received from Pat Cox, in responses to the messages of support that she and Hubert have received. Cox.pdf

100 Club ; The draw for October has taken place and the lucky winners are as below ;

£25 ; James Batkins, £15 ; Joyce Cripps, £10 ; Robin Newman

Wednesday Socials; Members should have been advised by Email, but due to a local funeral affecting many older members, the first social morning has been deferred by a week to October 25th. The format, for anyone who hasn't been before, is tea/coffee on arrival at 10-10.30, an assortment of games (card games, board games etc) before a light lunch of soup, bread and a pudding, followed by more games during the afternoon. The day ends with tea and cakes. The cost is £3. If games are not your thing, the day is also a good opportunity to have a good chat and generally catch up with other members.

If you are planning to come Shirley would appreciate a phone call (01494 872845) so she has some idea of numbers for catering purposes.

Notices ; We have been advised by the County Organisers of the Death of Denis Ward of Gerrards Cross, who might have been known to members. His funeral is on Friday 27th October, at 11:45am at Amersham Crematorium. Refreshments at GXBC after. The death of another county player, Arthur Frederick of Wendover has also been advised, but his funeral will be on the Isle of Wight.

RESULT Our first indoor game of the season was a friendly against Handy Cross and we only managed one winning rink to three, and lost by 49 to 86. Our top rink was Rose Kirby, Graham Buchanan, Bob Baker and John Anderson by 14 to 12. We hope to do better next match.

A few dates for your diary and other things!

Firstly, the winter games/lunch days will be starting on Wednesday October18th. Shirley Taylor is again organising the event so please come along and enjoy yourselves. Please mention it to any of your friends who do not have email access.
The Christmas card exchange and social morning get-together will be on Saturday December 9th ; Apologies for the earlier incorrect date
Secondly, the lists for entry to next year's County competitions are on the notice board at the club. If you want to enter, the closing date is in November so please let Tim Baldwin know in good time. The closing date for the National Competitions is later, but please let him know of your interest.

 Archived 4th November 2017

RESULT Our last outdoor game of the season was a friendly away at Hazells. The weather was not too good to us as it started to rain halfway but did stop after 15 minutes and the ground was heavy going. The score was 76 to 121 and we won on 2 triples out of 6,top rink going to Flora Alderton, Denise Rogers and Mike Alderton by 21 - 14. In spite of the weather and loss we all seemed to enjoy the game and company.

David Coode: an update on funeral arrangements

This will be on Monday October 9th at 11.30am at Amersham Crematorium. There will be refreshments (nibbles) afterwards at David's house, 7 Parkside, Lower Road, Gerrards Cross SL9 8LD. The family would like some idea of numbers for catering purposes so, if you are planning to go back to the house, please would you let Anne know as soon as possible.

RESULT ; Our last mid-week friendly was away at Kitcheners, where despite a sunny day, the green was particularly slow, and we went down by 44-76. We had one winning rink, with Michael Facey, Chris Moir and Mick Lane, and everyone enjoyed their game. Kitcheners noted that this was the last match on their green which is to be dug up and re-laid over the winter, all arranged through their landlords, Berkamsted School. We look forward to a new experience next year !

BBA Competitions ; This is just a reminder that entries to the BBA County competitions need to be submitted in early November, so please notify Tim B or add your names to the notices in the clubhouse as soon as possible if you are interested. The Last chance will be at the AGM, but will you remember ? Do it NOW ...

David Coode 1935 - 2017

It is with great regret, we have to inform members of the death of David Coode, who has been a long standing member of this Club. Our thoughts are with his family. David passed away this morning (Wednesday) and further details of his funeral will be notified to members in due course.

The end of the home season was celebrated with the Captain v President annual game, with Captain Mike Alderton standing down after 10 years with a narrow win, on his birthday, over the team led by President Staff Burbridge

The weather was sunny, and a great time was had by all. Now it is only a couple of away friendlies to go, and then many members move over to Short Mat in the village Memorial Hall (for details see the dedicated tab on this site) or the indoor season with one of the local indoor clubs. Well done to all members on a successful season, and see you all at the AGM and the Presentation Dinner.

RESULT ; On Saturday we played out last home game of the season, a friendly encounter with Herts B C, on a warm and sunny afternoon. Although some of the games were a little one-sided (both ways) there was healthy banter and the games were played out in good spirit to a comfortable Chalfont win , 90-65. We won on four of the five triples, with top Rink going to (yawn), Mike Alderton with Staff Burbridge and Linda James (24-4).

INDOOR GAMES ; The sign-up sheets for the four indoor matches arranged for Club members to play against Indoor Bowling Clubs as noted in the fixture card, are posted in the clubhouse. Please sign up in the next few days of the summer season, or contact Mike, John or Tim with your availability.

Winter Socials ; Shirley is prepared to hold the regular monthly socials and games days in the clubhouse on the third Wednesday of the month as usual, starting on 18th October. Also please reserve the 16th December for the pre-Christmas card-exchange and social morning in your diaries. More details in due course.

RESULT ; On Thursday, we played our return home friendly with Pinner Bowls Club. Following many substitutions, we had managed to establish an internal triple to play alongside, but then a communications cock-up caused our efforts to have a sixth match triple foundered. However, thanks to the three players who volunteered to stand down on the day. In the event they probably made a wise decision, as the drizzle became persistent, and after 6-8 ends, we took an early tea, and never went out again. We had been leading 39-26, but called it an honourable draw, with both teams losing to the weather!

NOTICE ; Saturday game v Herts ; This team is now picked, so please refer to the appropriate page in the 'Weekend Match' tab. Apologies for the delay.

RESULT ; In our game on Wednesday against Tring, we played 6 triples, and won three and lost three. Fortunately the overall result was a win by 102 shots to 84, mostly down to two teams who were vying for Top Rink. Both had shot differences of 18, and both won 13 ends to 5, so 'Captains Choice' went to John and Pam Anderson with Rose Kirby, over Tim Baldwin, Graham Buchanan & Bobbie Richards.

HELP !! ; The final weekend match (30/9) against Hazells still needs a few names to make up the team, but the final midweek game against Kitcheners (Thurs 28/9) has been reduced to four triples and the teams are now selected.

CAPTAIN'S v PRESIDENT's teams ; The members who signed up for this annual encounter have been divided up as per the link below, though the composition of each rink will be advised in due course ; v P teams.pdf

Meanwhile anyone finding themselves unable to play , or if there are any other members wishing to take part in this fun afternoon, please advise the Captain or President as soon as possible. As an incentive please note that the first drink after the game will be 'on the house', courtesy of the Captain & President!! Cheers !!

RESULT ; There was no game on Saturday, but on Sunday we played a friendly at home against Cippenham. This was reduced to 5 triples at our opponents request and thanks to all the members affected by the change , which introduced an internal pairs game to give everyone an outing. The match was a comfortable win, played in great spirit, winning on 4 of the 5 greens, with Top Rink, Rob Kirby, Denise Rogers and Hazel Baker leading the way (29-7) to an overall score of 111 - 58.

CONGRATULATIONS ; Well done to the 18 players who turned up for the final Friday roll-up on Friday 15th, and brought these weekly social gatherings to an end with the last triples in the damp and gathering gloom , and for the end of the Baked Potatoes for the season! This allowed Graham Buchanan (thanks for all the organising again this year) to determine the winner of the Fearnley Cup for the best average Friday night results over the season....

In 3rd place was Denise Williams.... and in 2nd Place was Morgan Kavanagh ...

& the Winner was ... (drum roll ).. Robert Yalden , who was duly presented with the cup.

Well done Robert.!

RESULT ; On Thursday we played our annual game against Croxley Guild, and this year we were the hosts. Despite a little rain at the start, the sun came out, and we enjoyed a good game, albeit a losing one. Overall we lost by 75 to 104 but had top rink of Michael Facey, Lyn Carroll and Rob Kirby who won by 21 to 10.

RESULT ; The Ladies played their last friendly of the season, away against Chesham on Wednesday, and despite the showery and chill conditions, managed to maintain their 100% friendly record with a win by 50 shots to 31, thanks in large part by Top Rink Flora Alderton, Chris Moir and Denise Williams, (22-5).

RESULT ; Following the Finals Weekend, on Tuesday (12/9) normal service was resumed with a friendly match agaist Stoke Poges. This was a three-triple game, and we won convincingly by 77-37. Top Rink was Flora Alderton, Graham Buchanan and Tim Baldwin, but we also won the other two games, one of them involving a recovery from 6-14 down to 20-17 up. The match was played in good spirit despite the showery conditions, and thanks also to the 6 reserves who played an internal game alongside.

100 Club ; The September draw was made over the weekend, with the following lucky winners coming out of the 'hat' ;
£25 Chris Pound ; £15 Maureen Burbridge ; £10 Rachel Gelder

FINALS NEWS; ( Day 3) the last four Finals were played out on Sunday, with the Ladies Triples (The Kernow Cup) and Gents Triples (The Coombes Cup) in the morning. The Ladies game gave Hazel Baker her 5th success, in a good team effort with Chris Pound & Joyce Cripps, over Flora Alderton, Pam Anderson & Maureen Harding.

Meanwhile the Mens game was won by Roger Darbourne, Joe Jaquest & Allan Rumble, in a close game over Bob Baker, Graham Buchanan & Mick Lane.

In the afternoon, Hazel Baker completed a full set of victories, winning the Club Championship (The Weatherley) overcoming a brave effort by John Pink, who fell short in a late rally to lose 13-21. Well done Hazel, in completing the weekend unbeaten. !

The last game of the weekend , played in increasingly foul conditions, was the Australian Pairs, (The Clare Cup) between Tim & Liz Baldwin and Lyn Carroll with Graham Buchanan. This game provided one of the closest games of the weekend, and much excitement in the (dry) clubhouse watching the ebb & flow in the drizzle and rain outside. Tim & Liz went 5-0 up to 5-9 down, to 21-11 up, to 21-22 down, before scrambling the last two ends to win 24-22.

Well done to all four players in bringing the Finals Weekend to a suitably fun climax, and thanks to Bob Baker and all his helpers for the organisation and resolution of all those little dramas along the way.

FINALS NEWS ; (Day 2) The run of success for Hazel Baker continued on Saturday with three more wins.

In the 2-wood singles, (The Jim West) after a close early tussle, she pulled away to beat Rose Kirby 22-10, and then in the Ladies Singles (The Rosella Cup) it was a similar pattern, with a strong finish to beat Candi Ivey 21-10.

Meanwhile, Club Captain Mike Alderton was playing in the Mens Final (the Saab) beating Barry Mills, who provided some good opposition before Mike also pulled away to win 21-11.

Mike and Hazel were then joined forces to play the Mixed pairs (the Roff) against George and Candi Ivey. The pattern continued with these finely matched pairs getting to 12-12 before Mike and Hazel won a 5 shot end, to assist them to another victory.

The Mens Pairs (The Wellings) was rather more one-sided with Ian McLeod and Joe Jaquest overcoming John Pink and Robert Yalden 23-7. Joe has really mastered his extension arm, using it to very good effect this afternoon.

The Ladies Pairs (Punter) was won by Joyce Cripps and Rose Kirby, after a spirited contest with Linda James and Liz Baldwin, where Rose, habitually a lead, proved equally effective as Skip, in winning 24-11.

Finally Barry Mills came back from his Saab defeat to win the Novice singles (the Cox shield) 21-14 against an unlucky John Pink who came close, but will have to await his second chance in the Club Championship (the Weatherley) on Sunday

FINALS NEWS ; (Day 1) The first final was completed on Friday afternoon, when Linda James, Morgan Kavanah and Hazel Baker made it three wins in three years in the mixed triples, coming back from a poor start to beat Bobbie and Colin Richards and Chris Pound. Despite the forecast, the weather held up on a bright afternoon, with rain only arriving later in the evening, and fingers are crossed for the same over the next two days.

STOP PRESS : In view of the weather forecast , and because it was to have been the finale to the Friday-night roll-ups, this evenings Roll-up session has been cancelled and the finale postponed to next Friday. This does not affect the Finals programme, which remains as advertised. Please support the first final this afternoon, showers or no showers.!!

NOTICE ; The entry forms for County Men & Ladies Competitions have been received and are posted in the Clubhouse. If you are interested in entering any of these competitions, please fill in your names, or contact Tim Baldwin to discuss.
The submission DEADLINE is Nov 17th, but I will submit at the END OF OCTOBER, to cover our Top Club, Champion of Champions, and Bucks Plate entries.
The Trundell & Burnham Plate competitions are under further discussion.

RESULT ; A new opponent this season is Rosedale Park, and after the scheduled mixed friendly was cancelled by the weather back in May, it was re-arranged for Wednesday, Sept 6th, when three triples played away at their greens in Hayes. Well done to our Top Rink, Rose Kirby, George Ivey & Pat McKay, leading us to an overall win by 56 - 43.

... meanwhile that Wednesday, two rinks of members played in the Chess Vale Gala, one each in the two groups playing 4 sessions of 8 ends. When the first group had completed their four games, the 'Chalfont 2' Team of Denise Rogers*, Liz Baldwin, Pam Anderson and Tim Baldwin had three wins and a draw and were 'leaders in the clubhouse', to await the scores from the second group. Chalfont's other team lead by Mike Alderton did well with three wins out of four, but only three other teams were capable of overtaking Chalfont 2. Stoke Poges lead the field until they lost their first four ends to Chesham, who then faltered themselves by letting SP win one end back. This left only Waddesdon in a winnable position, and indeed, they were leading with one final bowl to be delivered by their opposition, who managed to come in to take a single shot to deny them the point they needed. Well done Chalfont 2, for winning the ChessVale Gala !!

* apologies Denise, for an earlier temporary typo!

ALSO....Chesham Ladies Gala was on Monday and the Chalfont trio of Rose Kirby. Maureen Harding and Candi Ivey managed a very creditable 2nd Place out of 24. Well done, and a note to all members, - please pass any other significant gala information back to TB, for a mention in this website.

FINALS SCHEDULE; The Schedule for the three days of 8th-9th-10th September has now been determined, and can be found on the competitions page of this website, and shortly on the Clubhouse wall. All finalists - please ensure that you know your slot, and have read the pre-amble notes from the Competition organiser. Good Luck !!

RESULT ; Our end-of-season friendlies continued on Tuesday with a home fixture against Court Park. This match was reduced to four triples to assist our opponents, and on the day we also loaned them a player (..thanks Bobbie). We lost two of these, but won the others by sufficient margin to win the match overall, 74-59. This was in no small part due to our Top Rink Rose Kirby, Dave Harding and George Ivey (25-6).

On Monday a good number of members (16) enjoyed a JOLLY DAY OUT in Windsor. Our coach dropped us in the centre of town (eventually....when the driver was persuaded to ignore the sat-nav and listened to us!). Some then enjoyed an open-top bus ride around the town whilst others preferred a retail experience, coffee shops or a walk by the river, all meeting at the Pub for a finger-buffet lunch. This was close to the ferry stage where we caught a shuttle to Windsor Racecourse for the afternoon, allowing some members to cover their betting costs, ... but most didn't ! Thanks to Bob Baker for splendid organisation and a great day out for all concerned.

RESULT: We played Aston Clinton at home today Sunday 3rd Sept and we had close games on 3 rinks which we lost and a good win on the 4th triple by 27 to 10 which enabled us to win overall by 65 to 62 shots. Our winning triple was Mike Wise, Graham Buchanan and Rob Kirby. The weather was drizzle and dull all afternoon but that did not stop our enjoyment of the game.

RESULT: On Saturday 2nd Sept we played a friendly at Glory Mill and the rinks were 2 to us and 2 to them but the overall score was to our benefit by 65 to 60, very close, but still a win ! We had a top triple of Flora Alderton, Denise Rogers and Mike Alderton, 25 to 8 shots.

RESULT ; On Thursday, the Ladies played their match against Flackwell Heath, (which had been added to the fixture list after the cards had been printed ), and achieved another win, to maintain their 100% record in their friendlies, by 63 shots to 41. Our Top Rink was Gill Wise, Joyce Cripps and Maureen Harding.

NOTICE: This is to advise that the Berkhamsted match has been cancelled due to bad weather.

RESULT ; Apart from the Bucks Plate and TVL league earlier in the season, the club only plays one men-only friendly match, against Amersham. This year it was our turn to host the game, which was played on Tuesday 28th Aug. Four triples battled out a close encounter, and after being down at half-way, and up after 12 ends , after 14 ends it was 50-50 shots. However we rallied over the final ends to win three out of four greens, and by 69-62 overall. This was due to our Top Rink (Rob Kirby, John Anderson & Tim Baldwin, 22-13) and to a last-minute rally by the fourth and losing green (11-22) , who scored 7 of their shots in the last three ends to give us our winning margin. At least we can say that the men have been unbeaten in their friendly games this season!

Jubilee Cup ; On Bank Holiday Monday club members played for the Jubilee Cup, a drawn mixed 3 wood pairs event, played in two groups of 3 8-end matches, with a final between the group winners. Played on one of the hottest days of the year there was a good turnout of players and supporters, with a Barbecue for members and guests, including some from the Parish Council, to round off the day.
The bowling final was between Rose Kirby and Mike Wise, against Lyn Carroll with Nick Nicholls, with Rose and Mike carrying off the trophy after a close contest.

RESULT ; On Sunday morning our Chiltern & Thames Teams, and a number of very welcome supporters, went to Chesham B C to play in the quarter finals against Fassnidge. After a good start, the match settled into a very close pattern, with the overall shot count never far apart, and with two ends to go were still neck and neck. Unfortunately despite one winning rink (well done Candi Ivey Roger Darbourne and Ian McLeod) we lost out at the death, and so good luck to Fassnidge in the semi-finals in a fortnights time.

RESULT ; On Saturday we entertained the Bucks V P s to a 7 triple match on a lovely sunny, if somewhat humid day. We loaned one player to them (thanks Pam Dyer), but otherwise there were many familiar faces in their group. Although some games were unbalanced in both directions, overall the game was finely poised after 15 ends with a couple of shots in it. However the VPs held their nerve better than us, and emerged winners at the end by 135 - 112, and on 5 rinks to our 2. Our Top Rink was Rose Kirby. Dave Harding and Tim Baldwin. Thanks also to the Tea Team and helpers for another fine meal, bar and raffle.

Bucks Bowling Association ; August Newsletter. Please follow the attached link to the current newsletter. LADIES - note especially the draft proposals for changes to the Trundell & Burnham Plate. FRIDAY NIGHT Triples ; All members, please note that the last two Friday events , (September 1st & Sept 8th) will be starting at 5.30. (not 6.00)
A.G.M ; This is to confirm that this year's AGM is to be held in the clubhouse on Saturday November 4th, gathering at 10.00 for a 10.30 start. Nominations for the committee should be entered on the sheet in the clubhouse, and resolutions or items that members wish to be raised should be notified to the Secretary.

Please note in particular that the incumbents for Treasurer and Mid-week Captain will NOT be standing for re-election, so new candidates for these and all other positions are keenly sought.
The Closing Date for both nominations or submissions, is Monday 9th October, to allow the Agenda and other info to be distributed.

NOTICES ; We have been advised of the deaths of two members of other clubs, being Ray Merry of Gerrards Cross who died on Wednesday, and Joan Beech from Princes Risborough (whose funeral is at Amersham Crematorium at 1.15 on 12th Sept) .
RESULT : On Thursday 24th August we played a friendly four-triple match away at Wexham and won on 2 triples and lost on 2. Overall we won by 76 to 64 and our top triple was Bobbie Richards, Dave Harding and John Anderson by 23 to 5.

NOTICE ; We have received a communication from Emsmorn Bowlswear , concerning incorrect rumours of their intention to close the shop in Chesham. Please follow this link to see the full content of their advice. pdf.pdf
RESULT ; On Tuesday we played a three-triple friendly away at Stoke Poges, and achieved another comfortable win by 58 shots to 41. We only lost one of the three games, and that by a single shot, and Top Rink was Tim Timberlake , Staff Burbridge and Pat Cox (22-8).
RESULT: On Monday we entertained Harrow to a home friendly match of four triples, of which we won three, and won overall by 78 - 57. Our Top Rink was Flora Alderton, Denise Rogers, and Mick Lane (29-6).
Chiltern & Thames Quarter-finals ; Having reached the quarter-finals by winning our division, we now know our opponents as Fassnidge with the match being played at neutral Chesham next Sunday (Aug 27th) at 10.00. Captain Mike Alderton will post the team shortly, and we hope as many supporters as can come, will help us to go further in this competition.

 Archived Sept 5th 2017

Jubilee Cup ; As in the past few years, we are again organising a barbeque to follow the Jubilee Cup competition on Bank Holiday Monday (August 28). All members are welcome, as are spouses and partners. The BBQ will be free to members but there will be a small charge of £2 for non-members. There is a notice on the board asking everyone who is planning to come to the BBQ to sign up, including those members playing for the Cup. If you can't get to the Club to sign up, please will you let Anne Darbourne know, by phone or email, so we have a good idea of numbers and don't run out of bangers and burgers!

RESULT : On Sunday the 20th we played Desborough away and although the weather kept fine we only managed to win 1 triple out of 5 losing by 67 to 108. Our winning rink was Gill Wise, Nick Nicholls and John Anderson who won by 19 to 11.

RESULT ; On Saturday we played the last of our three Counties games, at home against Bassetsbury Manor. On a sunny but blustery afternoon, we played 4 rinks and despite a good start before tea, we slipped towards the end and won just 2, whilst also losing 2, and culminating in an 83-83 tied game. However because Bassetsbury had conceded the required fifth triple due to a shortage of players, we took 7 points to their 5. Our Top Rink was Bobbie Richards, Roy Pound, Pam Anderson and Tim Baldwin.

SHORT MAT ; A date for your diaries ; For those who want to join us on the short-mat evenings every Friday in the Chalfont St Giles Memorial Hall, the First Evening for the next winter season will be on October 6th. More details on the dedicated page of this website.

NOTICE ; On Sunday the 27th we were due to play away at Loudwater, but we have also qualified to play in the Chiltern & Thames League quarterfinals on that day (opposition and venue to be drawn on Sunday 20th) so we have a shortage of names on the list, and have CANCELLED the Loudwater game. We shall endeavour to avoid scheduling a game on this C&T quarters day in future, having won through for the last two years and experienced a clash of matches both times.

Ladies Gala ; The Club held its annual Invitation Ladies Triples event on Wednesday afternoon, and caught a lovely sunny day to show the club off to its best. Thanks to all those involved in the food, the bar and those who came to set out the greens, gazebos, raffle, and everything that contributed to a successful day for the 14 visiting teams . (You know who you are !)

The event was won by a team from Buckingham West End, on their third visit (Third time lucky!), narrowly pipping a team from Long Crendon (who had knocked us out of the Burnham Plate). A lady from Buckingham W E also won the Spider, which raised £45 for the Ian Rennie Hospice.

RESULT ; On Monday our Ladies entertained Chesham Ladies to a friendly match, and managed a convincing win , by 60-39, and two winning greens out of three, losing the third by a single shot. Top Rink was Linda James, Denise Rogers and Hazel Baker.

RESULT ; On Tuesday we visited Pinner BC in another friendly, and a very close-fought game it proved to be, on greens that we all found to be quite slow, and rather challenging. After a promising start, we were leading by 9 shots at half way. We were still leading with two ends to go, but snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, to lose overall by 81 - 87. We won two , drew one and lost on two greens, but Top Rink was Bob Baker, Staff Burbridge, and Mick Lane. (23-11). We await their return to us in September with anticipation !.

It is with sadness that we have heard of the death of recent past member, Jean Jackman, who passed away last week. Her funeral will be at Amersham Crematorium on this Friday, August 18th, at 4 pm.

RESULT ; The Three Counties game at home to Wexham was played on Sunday 13th August and the result was 1 winning rink to us, but 4 to them in a 2-10 points defeat. Our winning rink was Flora Alderton, Henry Bell, Bill Bowler and Allan Rumble who won by 4 shots. The overall score was 76 to 100.

RESULT ;On Saturday we played Rickmansworth away in a friendly game. 2 of our triples were winning at half time but eventually they succumbed., and we lost on all 4 rinks, and by 67 shots to 101.

RESULT ; In the 3 counties match on Thursday against Flackwell Heath we won by 94 shots to 84 picking up 7pts to 5 winning on 2 rinks and drawing on 1. The top rink was Nick Nicholls, Margaret Timberlake, Roger Darbourne and Mike Alderton who won by 21 shots to 12.

RESULT ; On Tuesday the Ladies entertained Windsor Great Park Ladies to a friendly, and although we needed to loan them one player (thanks, Liz) and despite the intermittent rain, it was an enjoyable afternoon. We won on two of the triples, losing the third, but won overall by 54 - 36. Our top Rink was Maureen Burbridge, Denise Rogers an Pat McKay (22-7)

RESULT ; On Monday afternoon we played the second leg of the friendly match against Gerrards. Last year this fixture was played for the BroomwadeTrophy, continuing a competition formerly between GX and Broomwade since the 80's , but now between GX and Chalfont. GX had prevailed in last years re-inauguration, but this year we had set up a good start by winning away, so our opponents 'had it all to do'. We fielded 13 ex-Broomwade members, but GX gave it a good go, winning today's game by 140 - 105, but this was not enough to overcome our away lead, and we won the trophy by 236 - 207 overall. We had three winning , and one drawing triple, and Top Rink went to Pat Cox with Roy Pound and Mike Moir (18-9). Otherwise the scoring was prolific on our 2 losing rinks, with a total of 100 shots aggregate across both teams being scored on the two greens. A fun afternoon, dodging the rain and socially after the match. We feel GX will not let us off so easily next year!

REMINDERS; Please look out for a new Quiz-nite Notice encouraging " tables" of 6 - we look to have 4 tables so far which gives us a start , but we need more to make a good night of it. Please check your friends and get those names down.

Also look out for a notice regarding the Windsor " Jolly Boys and Girls" outing on Sept 4th. We are still looking for more names to make coach hire viable but we shall have to see....

RESULT : The Three Counties game away against High Wycombe was played on Sunday afternoon (6th) and the result was very similar to the home leg played in June, in that we again had only one winning rink in a 2-10 points defeat. This winning rink was Bobbie Richards, Bob Baker, Robin Newman & Tony Batkins. Wycombe were worthy winners, and we wish their players who are off to Leamington every further success.

100 Club ; The winners for August have been drawn, and they are as follows ;

£25 ; Ivy Eyres, £15 Alexander Batkins, £10 ; Barry Dyer

RESULT ; On Saturday we entertained Princes Risborough to a friendly home game of 5 triples. We won on two of them, with Top Rink being narrowly decided on 'ends-won' by Flora Alderton, Lyn Carroll and Mike Alderton (19-14) , but unfortunately lost the other three, and the match overall by 74 - 94. This was very similar to our away game against them in June, (lost 79 - 96) Better luck next year !

RESULT ; On Thursday we played away at Eastcote. This is a friendly Fixture played once a year, alternating Home and Away, and we always have a tight tussle, mostly winning at home and losing away. This year was no different, as although we won three out of five triples, we still lost overall by 75-90. This was a slight improvement on our last away match in 2015, and well done to Top Rink Margaret Timberlake, Liz Baldwin and Roger Darbourne, (24-19 including an 8-shot end) and Rob Yalden, Hubert Cox and Denise Williams who scrambled to a one-shot win with a 3 on the final end. Both Clubs are looking to increase our matches to 2 per year , and this will be pursued in 2018.

NOTICE ; CANCELLATION ; The Chesham Pioneers, have unfortunately had to cancel their visit to a shortage of numbers. Apologies to those who had hoped to play in this popular charitable fixture with our sight-impaired visitors..

NOTE : this is a repeat reminder that the two games v Pinner are incorrect in your fixture card, and should be reversed regarding the Home/Away aspect, to ensure that we play at their green before the schools go back (parking). The team selection sheets are correctly labelled.

NOTICE ; Remember that the August Bank Holiday is Jubilee Cup day. Please look for the notice posted in the clubhouse, for this 3 wood Mixed Pairs, drawn competition. Depending on numbers, this will start at 11.00, and comprise three sessions of 8 ends for each pairing. Bring your own lunch, but the £2 entry includes Tea & Cakes mid-afternoon followed by a FREE BBQ at the end of play, for all players and members to attend.

RESULT ; On Tuesday we played a friendly game at home to Bassetsbury, dodging the showers. This was a three-triple match, of which we won two and lost one (by a single shot). Our overall win was by a margin of 64 - 42, and Top Rink was Bobbie Richards, Liz Baldwin & Rob Kirby. We look forward to our larger home encounter in the Three Counties League in two weeks time.

RESULT ; Following the Ladies games, at home a friendly game was played against Wendover. Despite being depleted by our morning matches and supporters, we were doing well at half way, and although some of those who were behind improved in the second half, others faltered, and we lost narrowly overall 85-95. We won on two rinks, and drew a third, with Top Rink being Janice Batkins, Barry Dyer & Graeme Richard

Ladies' Quarterfinals ; On Sunday morning our Ladies' Trundell and Burnham Plate sides were both involved in their quarterfinals. The Trundell was away at Chesham where our two rinks were level with their opposition overall at halfway, but despite their best efforts were unfortunately beaten in the second half, to leave the competition after a good run.

The Burnham Plate was away at Long Crendon, a new club for our particpants, but a lovely green and friendly hosts on a breezy morning after being very wet over-night. However the result was another loss, to a team that has not enough players to enter the Trundell, so we were taking on their 'A Team'. After a particularly poor start, the scoring was nip and tuck over the last 18 ends, but we were not able to claw back the early losses. Hard Luck to Flora Alderton, Lyn Carroll, Liz Baldwin and Mo Harding. However everyone enjoyed the game, and both sides were keen to get a regular mixed friendly into next years fixture list.

Thanks also to the travelling support that encouraged both teams this morning.

RESULT ; Our match on Saturday was a Three Counties fixture away against Harefield Hospital , and proved to be a very damp affair. Starting in drizzle, the match ended in a very wet afternoon, with the game curtailed to 12 ends (some managed 14) , as the green became increasingly difficult. We lost 46-79, but managed one winning rink, (Well done Bobbie Richards, Henry Bell, John Anderson & Roger Darbourne 12-11). Special mention also to Bill Bowler, Anne Darbourne, Colin Richards & Graeme Richards, who pulled back from a seemingly impossible position with four ends to go, to gain a draw, and a final point to give us 3 points to Harefield's 9

RESULT ; On Thursday we played a friendly game against Wexham, and despite the rain which intermittently dampened proceedings, we enjoyed a competitive encounter, in which we won three out of four triples and drew the fourth. Top Rink was Rob Kirby, Liz Baldwin & Candi Ivey (27-8), and we won overall by 81-43. A further internal game was played alongside the match to give as many members as possible a game, and other internal competitions meant that all 7 rinks were in use on a busy day at the club.

RESULT ;On Wednesday night, the men played another TVL league game, home & away against Cippenham. Unfortunately we only managed one win away and none at home. We lost by 57 shots to 67 and by 4 points to 11. Our winning rink was Graham Buchanan, John Anderson and Tim Baldwin by 17 - 11. This was our final TVL match.

Cancellations ; As noted previously, the Tuesday home match against Uxbridge was cancelled by them, though some players had a friendly roll-up nevertheless. Then on Wednesday, the Ladies game away against Gerrards Cross was also cancelled due to the prevailing (and further predicted) rain.

RESULT ; The final game in the Chiltern & Thames league round-robin stage was played away against Marlow on Monday evening. This was a game with little meaning as we had already won the Chiltern South Division, but we still had a good game, with one winning triple, (Rob Kirby, Denise Williams & Mike Alderton 17-15) but unfortunately lost the other two, and by 39shots -56 and 2pts - 8 overall. We now await the results in the Chiltern North Division to learn who we meet in the first knockout stage.

RESULT ; On Sunday we played our Three Counties game away to Chess Vale, in our annual efforts to master their artificial greens. Although we had achieved a 12-0 win at home, unfortunately we suffered a reverse with a loss by 68-108, winning on only 1 rink. This Top Rink of Rose Kirby, Janice Batkins, Rob Kirby and Tim Baldwin scraped over the line on the last end to win by a single shot, earning the team 2 league points to Chess vale's 10.

RESULT: On Saturday we played a friendly home match against Aylesbury Town and it was raining steadily when we started. We had to stop for an early cup of tea after 6 ends and at this time we were losing badly on most triples. It was still a bit damp when we resumed and we were going to stop after 12 ends if it did not get better but lucky for us it did and we continued to the 18th end. Although we managed to win on 2 and draw on another triple we still lost by 80 shots to 94. Our winning team was Janice Batkins, Nick Nicholls and Denise Williams by (15-12) . I would like to thank the tea team of Denise Rogers, Joyce Cripps and Flora Alderton for managing to get the teas sorted out for us in the short notice of an early break.

UPDATE ; Further to the reduction posted yesterday, Uxbridge have had further drop-outs for illness and availability, and have had to cancel the match. Apologies to those hoping to have a game on Tuesday, but if sufficient members roll-up at the original time, some internal triples will be organised for them.

NOTICE ; Uxbridge 25th July ; Unfortunately our opponents have asked to reduce the fixture to only three triples, so the selection will be adjusted, with an internal rink to give as many members as possible a game on that afternoon., Please re-visit the team sheets which will be re-posted shortly.

RESULT: On Thursday afternoon we played a friendly home match against Kitcheners. Although some of our triples took an early lead, this changed as the game progressed. Some leaders slipped, but one of the other triples pulled up at the end to win, joining our Top Rink of Joyce Cripps, Roy Pound and Rob Kirby (27-6). This healthy margin meant that despite only winning 2 of 5 triples we won overall by 94 shots to 78 , ending a nice afternoon game.

RESULT ; On Wednesday night, the men played another TVL league game, home & away against Egham. Unfortunately we were less successful than on Monday night, winning one at home (well done to Joe Jaquest, Dave Harding and Mick Lane, 15-12) but lost the three others , so went down 2 pts to 11 overall.

...meanwhile ; Congratulations to Rose Kirby, Mo Harding and Lyn Carroll for winning the Cippenham Ladies Gala , on shot difference from a High Wycombe Team.

Chiltern & Thames update ; The following links will open the latest information issued by the league, showing that we should win the Chiltern South Division, even before we play our final game at Marlow. Well done to the team for the results so far.The situation in Chiltern North division is not so advanced, so our quarter-final opponents (scheduled for Aug 27th) cannot yet be determined.

REMINDER ; A quick reminder that our sponsor Katie Forman will be giving the second of her informal talks on financial matters at the club this Friday (July 21st) starting at 4.30.

As well as going into more detail about inheritance tax and related stuff, Katie plans to cover various other ways of generally cutting the tax bill including tax-efficient ways of helping children and grandchildren. If there are specific issues anyone wants to have information about please come along and ask the question. It's all very informal with questions and discussions an important part. The session will end in plenty of time for the friday evening triples.
Those who came to the first talk found it enjoyable and informative without being in the slightest bit pushy, so hope to see you on Friday.

RESULT ; On Tuesday afternoon we played a friendly away against Ladygate. On a pleasant afternoon, Ladygate took an early lead, and although honours were even in the second half, our hosts won overall by 92 - 80 shots. We nevertheless won two rinks, with top honours to Maureen Harding, Chris Moir & Roger Darbourne (23 - 8), and a special mention to Lyn Carroll with Tim & Liz Baldwin, who managed an 8 shot end in the second win.

RESULT ; On Monday evening, the men played a Thames Valley league game (Home & Away) against Iver Heath. The match was well balanced, with one win and one loss each, both Home & Away, giving each team 5 points each. However there are also additional points for aggregate home, aggregate away, and overall total, and Chalfont took all these additional points to gain a win by 75 shots to 61, and 8 points to 5. Well done to our two winning teams, and in particular our Top Rink of Dave Harding, Barry Mills and Bryan Hedley, who won 31-7 away.

Ladies v Gents ; This annual internal encounter was played on Sunday, with the gentlemen recording a narrow win over the Ladies, whilst loaning them a couple of 'Honorary Ladies' in the persons of 'Nickola Nicholls', and the flamboyant 'Staffanie Burbridge'.

RESULT: We had a very close and good friendly game on Saturday 15th July at Stoke Poges where we managed to win 4 rinks out of 5 by 82 to 76 shots. Our top triple was Chris Moir, Mike Wise and Graeme Richards by 19 to 14. Another good result for us.

Ladies ; Burnham Plate ; We played-off against Denham on their green on Thursday evening to decide the Winners & Runners-up for Division 4, but unfortunately came off second-best, (22-10) to a team including a past Chalfont Member, Carol Crowford. This means that the Chalfont team will have to travel to play their quarter-final against Long Crendon on July 30th.

100 Club ; The Winners in July were drawn as follows ;

£25; Staff Burbridge, £15; Shirley Taylor, 10 William Gordon (from the Batkins family)

Competitions ; It is not usual to comment on the internal competitions, but the first round Rosella game between Mo Harding and Hazel Baker has been reported as a classic worthy of a final. A series of very 32 ends, all with closely contested heads went all the way, with Hazel edging it 21-18 at the end. Well done to both players, and lets have more like it in the rest of the competitions!

Winter fixtures ; The Handy Cross Shield ; Please note that the newly released dates for the 2017-18 HX Shield can be found on the 'indoor' tab of this website. This will be of most interest to our indoor bowlers, and particularly those who play at Handy Cross. They are NOT in the fixture card.

RESULT We played the Tring home game which was previously cancelled due to bad weather on Wednesday 12th July and unfortunately we lost 4 triples out of 5 and by 64 to 98 shots. Our winning rink was Robert Yalden, Colin Richards and John Anderson who won by 15 to 8. The weather this time was sunny and warm.

RESULT ; On Tuesday evening we played our second Chiltern & Thames match against Glory Mill, away on their green. Unfortunately the rain was persistent throughout the evening, and the game, which was effectively reduced to a 'hurling' contest by the very slow and waterlogged green, was curtailed to 10 ends. At that stage we were winning on two rinks, but down in the third, and lost overall shots by 25 - 27. This gave us 4 points to Glory Mill's 6. We now have one final match away against Marlow, which could well be the decider for who wins the league, this space !

RESULT ; In the evening, the Men played Ashford at home in the first round of the ThamesValley League 1-2-3 knockout. The Triples suffered a setback when Skip David Coode had to retire with a persistent nosebleed, but Mike Alderton was available to substitute. Nevertheless, we started well in the pairs & triples, but our opponents came back as they worked out our green, and they proved too good and pulled away to win each of the three disciplines. We wish them well in the rest of the competition, and to those of their members who have won through to variousNational Finals in Leamington.

RESULT ; On Monday afternoon, the Ladies played a friendly against Amersham. Unfortunately Amersham could only raise 8 players so Liz Baldwin was loaned to them and a close match ensued through another warm afternoon. After a shaky start, we were drawing on one and losing two at half-time, but a stronger second half saw a recovery to one win and two draws, winning the match by 49-46 overall. Top Rink was Flora Alderton, Chris Moir & Pam Anderson ( 17-14)./

Burnham Plate ; Update ; The Play-off for Division 4 will be against Denham, Away, on Thursday 13th July. A win would give a home quarterfinal against Loudwater, but to lose would mean a visit to Long Crendon , either to take place at 10.00 on 30th July. The play-off four have been selected, and good luck to the team.

Trundell ; Update ; The Trundell team finished second to Iver Heath in their division , so go into their Quarterfinal against Chesham, (winners of their division) to be played away, again a 10.00 on 30th July. This team has also been selected, so fingers crossed all round !

TRIPLES WEEKEND ; The results from the weekend are now posted on the competitions page, together with a slight rule change which has been highlighted by a problem experienced on Saturday where a member had to withdraw from a game after it had started. Apologies to all those who were affected by this situation.

RESULT; On Thursday the final game in the Ladies' Burnham Plate was played at home against Gerrards Cross, and resulted in another emphatic win, 35 shots to 6, leaving us unbeaten, and top of Division 4b. Well done to our representatives in this match, Flora Alderton, Margaret Timberlake , Lyn Carroll and Maureen Harding, and the rest of the members who have played so far. This result means a play-off against the winners of Division 4a, believed to be Denham, on July 13th, venue to be clarified. The play-off is to decide the winners and runners-up of Division 4 overall, when both teams are paired against the top two in Division 3 in the quarters.... complicated isn't it !!

RESULT ; The good results continued on Tuesday evening at home to Glory Mill in the C&T league. After a slightly faltering start on two of the triples, we were soon back into our stride, and went on to win on all rinks, and by 80 shots to 37 overall. Top Rink was Rob Kirby, Hazel Baker and Mike Alderton (32 - 9) and another 10 points to our league tally.

RESULT : The new week started with the resumption of our Chiltern & Thames campaign, and a home tie against Marlow. We were both unbeaten in this league this season. After a few ends we were well up in two triples , but well down in the third. However as the evening progressed, the scores stayed in our favour, and with perseverance and a little fortune, the third team also moved into a narrow lead by the end, to secure a 10 points to Nil victory, and 66 shots to 39. Top Rink was Hazel Baker, Denise Williams and Mike Alderton (31-10). We now take on Glory Mill on Tuesday night.... Watch this space.

NOTICE ; After a little persuasion, Bob Baker has agreed to run another trip to the Manor House at Okehampton next spring, (25th Feb - 1st March), and a Notice has been posted in the clubhouse seeking indications of interest. Full details will shortly be added to the Social Pages of this website, along with details of a trip to Windsor, and a Quiz Night, in the latter stages of this summer season.

NOTICE ; There has been an amendment to the two games we play against Pinner later in the season, reversing the Home/Away locations in the fixture card.

The match on 15th August will be Away, (taking advantage of their easier parking out of school holidays) , and at Home on September 21st.

RESULT ; On Sunday, we played another friendly, being the return match away against Rickmansworth British Legion, against whom we started the season with a home win. On a lovely warm summers day, we shared the honours with two games each, but won the match overall by 76-71, helped mainly by Chalfont Top Rink, Rose Kirby, Linda James and Mike Alderton, (26-12) (apologies for the earlier home/away mistake - for those that noticed !)

Meanwhile, hard luck to Rose Kirby and Hazel Baker, whose run in the National Ladies Pairs came to an end in the third round on Saturday.

RESULT ; On Saturday we played our annual fixture against Windsor & Eton, and this year it was our turn to host. The game was reduced accommodate our visitors 14 players , and thanks to Pat McKay for also helping them out to make the fifth triple. At half time the match was comfortably in our favour, but after Tea, W & E staged a recovery to win three of the five games, but mostly thanks to our Top Rink of Pam Dyer, Bryan Hedley and Roger Darbourne (31-8) we held on to win 90-78.

RESULT ; Later on Thursday the Trundell Ladies played their last league stage, home & away against Wexham. In a great end to this phase, they achieved a commanding win 65-22, taking all 5 points, with the Home team of Rose Kirby, Linda James , Denise Williams and Hazel Baker winning 46-9. This win ensures a quarter-final place, but opponents and other details will need to await results elsewhere (though it looks odds-on we will have to play Chesham at their ground on July 30th). Well done Ladies.

RESULT ; On Thursday there was a friendly triples match away against Cippenham. After a delayed start due to hiccups in some of our teams travel arrangements, and one unfortunate absentee, the match took place with three triples and one game of our 2 versus their 3.

All the games were close, and we won two and lost two. However, after we deducted 25% from our Top Pair of Pearl Howl and Staff Burbridge's 25-7 win , the overall result was a single-shot win by 64-63. Our hosts were very understanding of our problems, and helpful in accommodating the new arrangement.

TRIPLES WEEKEND ; Participants please note that both the Ladies & Gents quarter-final games will be at 2.30 on Saturday 8th July, leading to the four Semi-finals which will all be at 2.30 on Sunday 9th July. Rinks will be drawn on the day. Dress ; Greys

All entrants please check that your team is aware and prepared, as absentees on the day can be very difficult to resolve !

RESULT ; We played a 3 Counties return match on Tuesday 27th June, against Amersham on our green and the weather was not as sunny or hot as the previous week. We managed a good win on 4 out of the 5 rinks and total shots of 116 to 68 picking up 10 points to 2. This was a good win for us and we had 2 close top rinks with the winner being Chris Moir, Dave Harding, Denise Williams and Mike Alderton by 26 shots to 7.

RESULT ; On Monday we visited Gerrards Cross, and having lost badly (85-122) in last years equivalent friendly fixture, hopes were not high. What a difference a year makes! The weather was fine, and the greens played well, and we won on 5 out of 6 triples, and 131-67 overall. Our Top Rink was Robin Newman, John Pink and Denise Williams (25-7), and we look forward to the home return in a months time.

RESULT ; On Sunday we played another Three Counties game, this time away against Bassetsbury Manor. Our opponents had already waived one rink through their lack of players, but the remaining four were closely fought in the first half, with only a few shots in it. However after tea we got a better measure of their tricky greens, to pull away to a win of all 12 points, and 89 -51, thanks to a good all round performance by everyone. Top rink was Roger Darbourne , Liz Baldwin, Denise Williams and Rob Kirby (25-9) , and a mention to Dave H, Bob B, Anne D & Tim Baldwin who scraped home by a shot after being 5 down with three ends to go, to complete the clean sweep.

 Archived  10th July 2017

County Under 25's ;  Commiserations to Morgan Kavanagh and his Milton Keynes partner in the County under-25's,  in going out of this competition on Sunday, but congratulations in having reached the semi-final and losing to a more experienced pair.  Better luck next year.

RESULT ; On Saturday we played a friendly at home against Denham, and despite winning three of the six triples, with a top rink of Gill & Mike Wise with Mo Harding scoring 20 - 7, we still contrived to lose by 10 shots 94-104. (sorry Mo for the earlier typo)

RESULT: The ladies played their Burnham Plate and Trundall matches on Thursday against Cippenham and Iver Heath respectively. The team at Cippenham consisted of Flora Alderton, Gill Wise, Lyn Carroll and Maureen Harding and won by 21 to 20 shots getting 4 shots on the last end. The Trundall team at home ended with a draw of 18 shots each and the away team lost by 16 shots to 25. It was mentioned that Iver Heath ground was very wet although we had no rain.

Burnham Plate UPDATE ; The ladies win on Thursday means that they cannot be caught and will win their Division, 4b. They will next play the winners of Division 4a (currently looks odds-on to be Denham) on July 13th, to decide who is to be deemed winner and runner-up in the overall Division 4, to play in the quarter finals on July 30th, against Division 3.

RESULT: Hazel Baker and Rose Kirby played a county match on Wednesday against two ladies from Wexham and won quite convincingly.

The men played in the last Bucks Cup game against a Home/Away team from high Wycombe and only managed 1 win away and lost the other 3, losing by 2 points to 12.

RESULT: We played a 3 Counties match today, Tuesday 20th June, against Amersham at their green and although we recovered from a bad first half in very hot weather to win on 2 rinks out of 5 we lost 81 shots to 100 and only got 4 points to their 8. This was the same as last year. Our top rink was Joyce Cripps, Robert Yalden, Denise Williams and Allan Rumble who won by 19 to 14 shots. We managed to do this without some of our more experienced players , so well done to all who played.

Note ; Please be aware that Bassetsbury Manor is down to 4 rinks instead of 5 in the match on 25th June. The teams for this match has now been re-selected.

Note ; There was an error in the posting of the Friendly team to play Away at Cippenham on June 29th, in that a 'Home' match was wrongly stated . This has been corrected on the team-pick sheet and hopefully all players will know this from their fixture cards.

RESULT ; Although there was no Club event on Sunday, two matches did take place. Rose Kirby and Hazel Baker played in the National Senior Pairs at home against a couple from Iver Heath and Richings Park, and won 25-13 to go on to the next round against a pair from Chesham. Good Luck to them.

Meanwhile the club was represented at the Chiltern & Thames League Champions Day, when last years winners, The Mill B C hosted a 4-triple match against representatives from the rest of the league. The champions won all four games, but our three, Lyn Carroll with Maureen and Dave Harding, gave a good account, and had a most enjoyable afternoon.

RESULT ; Our only match of the weekend was against Chess Vale at home in the Three Counties League. Our record against Chess Vale is not good and one needs to go back to 2013 for a home win , but this year saw a wonderfully warm and sunny day, and an improvement with a solid win, on all 5 rinks and by 118 - 76 overall, taking all 12 points. Our Top spot was tightly contested by Mo & Dave Harding, Chris Pound and Tony Batkins on one rink, and Rose Kirby, Linda James, George Ivey an Hazel Baker on another. Both had +13 shot differences, but Top Rink honours went to Tony and his team on winning ends.

Ladies v Gents; There has been an update on the postponement of this club event. Because it appears unlikely that the club will now be involved in the Bucks Cup quarterfinals scheduled for Sunday 16th July, this date is free for the Ladies v Gents to be re-organised then, so a notice and sign-up sheet to that effect, will be posted in the clubhouse. The date in September will remain a free-day for now...

RESULTS ; Thursday was a busy day, starting with a friendly away to Harrow, This mixed match was thin on Ladies because the Burnham plate and Trundell were played on the same day (see below). This fixture has often proved difficult Away, (though less so at Home), and so it proved again this year. Last year was rained off, but this year the sun shined and the competition was hot. At half way, we were leading 33-26 and only losing on one rink. However something in the biscuits at tea time gave our opponents a spurt and they recovered to win two of the 4 rinks ( we tried to claim a 2-2 draw...!) and 69-60 on overall shots. Our Top Rink was Joe Jaquest, Barry Mills and Dave Harding (21-13) and we look forward to the return leg in August.

The Ladies had a better time, recording a win in the Burnham Plate against Gerrards Cross by 34-20 (well done Flora Alderton. Lyn Carroll, Liz Baldwin, & Maureen Harding) and then in the Trundell Trophy, beating Burnham B C away 21-14, (well done Chris Moir, Denise Rogers, Hazel Baker & Candi Ivey) and despite losing a close game at home, taking the extra points for an overall win by 41-36, and thereby 4 points to 2.

Additional Game for the Men ; The T V L 1-2-3 will be against Ashford , at their green, on July 10th , at 6.00 though this time has to be confirmed with our opposition. This KO competition is integral with our affiliation, though we have opted out of their Double-fours this year. A sheet will be put in the clubhouse shortly, so please sign up your availability.

RESULTS ; On Wednesday the Ladies played an afternoon friendly against Amersham, and secured a victory by two triples to one, and 57 - 49 shots overall. Top Rink was Rose Kirby, Lyn Carroll & Denise Williams (22-16).

In the evening the Men played a Bucks Cup match against Chesham and fared less well, with one win away (well done Graham Buchanan, Barry Mills & Tim Baldwin) but losing the other away game, and both home ones (albeit one was by a single shot) to lose by 10 points to 2.

REPORT ; The Club's annual Mixed Invitation Gala was held on Tuesday on a lovely summers day, and thanks are due to all our members who made the day a success, and to the thirteen clubs who sent teams to support us. The bowling was competitive and the results over the four sessions were close. The final game to leave the green happened to be the one to resolve third place, with Gerrards Cross beating Glory Mill. First & Second was a close call all day with only one point between them, and they were level at the end, with the result resolved on shot difference. The team from Cheddington, lead by Geoff Roberts, (helped by a 'hot shot' early in the day) won by one shot over The Mill, and prizes were presented by President Staff Burbridge. The Charity Spider was won by Joyce from Gerrards Cross and raised £50 for Scannapeal.

NOTICE ; Ladies v Gents. Due to a number of withdrawals due to the competition with Fathers Day , the Chalfont Village Street Party, and our sending a team to play in the C&T Champions Day at The Mill BC, (good luck, Maureen Dave & Lyn), it has been decided to postpone the Ladies v Gents event to Sat 16th Sept, its traditional place after Finals weekend which is a FREE SATURDAY in your fixture cards. We trust that those who had applied will understand, and we will try to avoid having events on Fathers Day in future years.

NOTICE ; An advance date for your Diaries ; The Presentation Dinner will be on Friday 1st December, at Harewood Downs Golf Club. ( Don't worry - This doesn't clash with the Turkey & Tinsel trip to Bournemouth !) . This date will be also recorded on the Competitions Page for future reference.

RESULT The first Thames Valley League game of the season, postponed from earlier in May due to the weather, was played against Richings Park on Monday evening. Two Men's triples are played at home, and two played away in this format, and we shared the honours by winning one at home and one away, but losing the other two. The shots details and points allocation will be clarified shortly.

Re-arranged Game ; The friendly game against Tring which was abandoned on June 6th due to the weather has been re-arranged for July 12th. As previously this game will be at Home, starting at 2.30, ans dress -Greys. A new sheet will be posted, but where possible, recognition will be given to those who were due to play in the abandoned game.

RESULT ; The Three Counties game against High Wycombe was played in windy sunshine and proved a testing afternoon as we managed only one winning Rink, and lost the match by 10 points to 2. (86-139). Our Top Rink was Graham Buchanan, Morgan Kavanah , Hazel Baker and Mike Alderton, (24-18) but it was clear how HW have been unbeaten so far this season, in one case coming back from 3-16 to squeeze home 19-17.

100 Club; The June Draw for the 100 Club was made last night and the winners are as follows ; £25 Sylvia Webb, £15 John Pink, £10 George Ivey

Cancellation ; Unfortunately there were not enough names down for the 'Fun Day' on Sunday, so members can concentrate on their internal competition matches ? Apologies to those who had expressed interest.

STOP PRESS: The Secretary of the Three Counties League has withdrawn the status sheets that were published a couple of days ago, and which were reproduced on this website. We have deleted the links and comments on this erroneous issue, and links to a revised results list & league table have been added below. Suffice to say that we play High Wycombe at the weekend, and we now understand that they are unbeaten to date. .......No Pressure then ! table 8 June.pdf Results 8 June.pdf

RESULT ; On Thursday 8th June we played a friendly at home against Cippenham on a very dull afternoon and won by 4 rinks to 1 getting 69 shots to 50. Our top rink was Robert Yalden, Chris Pound and Allan Rumble who won by 21 - 9 shots.

Ladies Pairs ; In the evening after the Tring cancellation, following a brief respite, the showers continued, but Rose Kirby and Hazel Baker nevertheless played a pair from Iver Heath in the National Ladies Pairs. This was a very wet, but close game, and with one end to go, the Chalfont pair were a single shot ahead. Iver Heath moved into a three-shot advantage in this last end to glimpse victory, but with her last bowl of the match Hazel recovered to take another shot to win 16-14. Well done and good luck in the next round.

Not so fortunate were John Anderson & Mike Alderton who played through the rain at Wexham, (which was slow enough last weekend) to lose in the men's pairs.

CANCELLATION ; Unfortunately the home match against Tring was cancelled due to the heavy overnight and morning rain, and uncertainty regarding possible damage to the greens following ponding which was still present late in the morning. Apologies to those selected, particularly should the club actually dodge the afternoon showers which are predicted ! We will investigate a re-arrangement of this fixture if a mutually sensible date can be found before we visit Tring in September.

RESULT ; On Monday evening (5th June) we played Chesham at home in the second leg of our Chiltern & Thames fixture. The rain arrived as forecast, and a miserable three hours ensued as we battled both our opponents and the elements. Despite being 23-30 behind overall at half-way, we coped with the conditions marginally better than our visitors, and came through to win two of the three triples, and 53-49 overall. Top rink was Rose Kirby. Pam Anderson & Tim Baldwin (26-15, so we took 8 points to Chesham's 2, 18-6 over the 2 legs.

Financial Advice ; This is to let you know that Katie Forman's talk on Inheritance Tax, Powers of Attorney and related topics, which had to be postponed because of her illness, will now take place on this coming Friday, June 9th in the clubhouse, starting at 4.30pm. It will be very informal, with lots of opportunities for questions and discussion, and will finish in good time for the friday evening bowling. There was quite a lot of interest in this talk and we hope that you will all be able to be there on Friday, and please pass this information on to any members who do not have access to the website.

RESULT ; On Sunday afternoon we resumed our campaign in the Three Counties League and played away at Wexham . Their greens were slower and tighter than we have encountered recently, which made for an interesting afternoon. We managed three winning rinks , but the two losses were sufficient to giveWexham the overall shots by 98-95, making the match a draw 6pts each. Our Top Rink was Bobbie Richards, Liz Baldwin, George Ivey and Anne Darbourne, and a special mention to Hazel Baker's team who were mostly behind all afternoon before a final spurt to win by 1 shot on the final end.

County Comps ; Well done to Morgan Kavanagh and his partner from Bradwell (Milton Keynes) in the County Under-25 Mens Pairs who won well again (29-6) today at MK, to progress to the Quarter Finals.

Meanwhile, commiserations to Mike Alderton & Hazel Baker who fell at the second hurdle of the County mixed pairs, losing to a pair from Richings Park on their 'lightning-fast' green.

RESULT ; Later, on Thursday evening, the Ladies played their first match in the Burnham Plate, at home against Cippenham. Our team of Gill Wise, Lyn Carroll, Liz Baldwin & Maureen Harding, had a steady game and after a very even first 12 ends, won a 6, and thereafter gradually drew ahead to a final win by 21-13.

RESULT ; On Thursday we played Princes Risborough in our annual mid-week friendly. This match has always been close, but for the past few years, PR have always had the edge. Regrettably this again proved the case. Playing away in glorious sunshine we took a little while to find our way on their greens, and at half time we were 15 shots behind. In the second half we held our own, but couldn't claw back, losing overall by 79 - 96. We had two winning rinks (out of 5) with Top Chalfont Rink going to Rob Yalden, Graeme Richards and Candi Ivey, 20-13. We entertain P R at home in a weekend game later in the season, and will look to overturn this result !

NOTICE ; Remember that this month there are a number of Club Events for your Diary.

This Saturday is the Friends and family afternoon when you can bring your guests to try the game and see how you spend your summer !

On Sunday June 11th , there is a Fun afternoon planned with a series of different games on the green, managed by Mike Alderton under the guiding hand of Bill Bowler. Look for the Sheet in the clubhouse to sign up for this event.

For many of the COMPETITIONS the first play-by date is also June 11th. However, remember that the first play-by date for the Mixed Triples has been relaxed to 2nd July, (due to popular demand).

On 13th June, the club hosts its Invitation Mixed Gala, so assistance on morning to erect gazebos etc before our guests arrive, will be appreciated and timings notified nearer the time.

On Sunday June 18th, the annual Ladies v Gents will be staged, and again, please put your names down so that the Captains can pick their teams.

RESULT ; Our second match in the Bucks Cup was against Chess Vale on Wednesday evening (May 31st). Adapting to their artificial green is always a challenge, but both away teams played a close game, eventually winning one (Mike Alderton, Hubert Cox and Tony Batkins) and holding on 12-12 at the 16th end before going down. The story at home was similar, winning one, (David Coode, Dave Harding and Mick Lane) but losing the other. Overall we lost shot score 65 - 74, winning 4 points to Chess Vale's 10.

NOTE ; Hard luck to Rose Kirby and her Ladies' rink, who had entered in the County 4's competition, coming up against a Burnham team on their rather poor green (for which apologies were duly offered by them) and being knocked out in the first round on Tuesday.

RESULT; We played away at Aston Clinton in another friendly on Tuesday 30th May and having increased the match to 6 triples to accommodate players on both sides, we managed to win on 4 of them and an overall shot difference of 95 -86. Our top rink was Sue Patey, Colin Richards and Nick Nicholls who won 26 -17, including a 6 on the final end.

Spring Plate ; We held our Spring Plate competition on Monday 29th May which was affected by some late withdrawals, but still mostly played as triples, and this was won by Margaret Timberlake, Mike Moir and Roy Pound, and by 6 points over the runners up.

RESULT; We entertained Desborough bowling club in a friendly triples match on Sunday 28th May and the weather kept mainly fine and it was hot and humid, but nice to bowl. We won 4 out of 5 rinks and a total shots of 104 to 64 which was very rewarding after a similarly heavy defeat in the fixture at this stage last year . Our top rink was Bill Bowler, Pat McKay and Tony Batkins who won by 24 shots to 10.

RESULT We played Harefield Hospital on Saturday 27th Mat in a Three Counties match and although we only won on 2 rinks out of 5 we managed a win on shots by 100 - 89 giving us 6 points each. Our top rink was Chris Moir, Roy Pound, Pam Anderson and George Ivey winning by 33 to 7. The weather was windy but no rain appeared which made it a good afternoon for all.

RESULT ; On Wednesday 24th May we played our first Bucks Cup game after being promoted from the Plate competition last year, but unfortunately lost to Marlow. Despite winning one game away and drawing one at home the other two losses meant a shots defeat and 3-11 in points overall. It is tough at the top!

RESULT ; We have entertained Harrow & District over many years, but missed last year when they underwent a re-organisation, but they returned on Tuesday to resume our annual encounter. Starting in drizzle, we were winning on four rinks to one loss at half-time, and cruising 54-38 in the lead. However after tea, the sun came out and Harrow started a come-back so that by the end we were winning on one, and losing on four! However our one winning (and Top) Rink of Bob Baker, Denise Rogers & Candi Ivey managed an impressive 35 - 4 win in a rather mis-matched game, to allow us to scrape home to win overall 88 - 85.

NOTICE ; As announced last Friday to those at the triples social evening, unfortunately there will be no baked potato meal this week, as all the ladies are away on various holiday breaks at the same time. Normal service will resume on June 2nd.

NOTICE ; Spring Plate ; Please see correction. Most members will have seen the sign-up sheet for the Spring Plate next Bank Holiday Monday, so this is a last call for those who were meaning to sign up but have yet to do so. This is a drawn mixed Triples competition and starts at 10.30 on Monday 29th May. If you cannot get down to the clubhouse, call Maureen Burbridge or send a 'Contact Us' note through this website.

Ladies 'Academy' ; Well done to those who attended the first session on May 22nd. The next session will be on Monday June 5th, at 4 o'clock.

RESULT ; On Sunday we entertained Windsor Great Park to a friendly 6 rink encounter, and on a glorious sunny afternoon, the game was hotly contested ! After at least three years without a mixed-rinks win against WGP, fortunately Mike Alderton, (also smarting from yesterday's loss ?), managed a solid Top Rink with Linda Lames, Chris Moir and Pam Anderson, (26-13) as we came through with an overall win by 125 - 103.

RESULT ;We play Cippenham a number of times each season, in friendlies, TVL and Burnham Plate. The first encounter was on Saturday in a 6-triple friendly, and it was first blood to our opponents on their turf. We won two triples to their four, although two of the losses were by single shots, and lost by 84 - 99 overall. Our Top Rink was Joyce Cripps, Graeme Richards and Tim Baldwin (18-10) and we look forward to redressing the balance later in the season.

NOTICE ; On Saturday June 3rd , are holding a Friends and Family afternoon, starting at 2.00pm. It is exactly what it says it is, an opportunity to bring friends and family to the Club to see how you spend at least some of your spare time and have a go at bowling themselves. We did this last year and it was very successful in showing people how enjoyable the game can be. Of course the ulterior motive is that it would be lovely if it resulted in new members but the main objective is for you to have a good time at the Club with your friends and family.

Age is no barrier, although 10 years old is probably about the minimum. Woods will be provided and shoes are available although almost any flat shoe without heavy tread or studs would be suitable. The bar will be open and tea/coffee/soft drinks will also be available.
It should be a very pleasant afternoon and if you are thinking of coming along it would be veryhelpful if you could let us know (by email or phone or in person) how many people you would be bringing. This will help us plan.

NOTICE ; The Committee have ratified the Coaches' proposal that George Ivey be formally appointed as the Club's Senior Coach. George is already a County Coach, and we thank him for offering to co-ordinate the coaching initiatives within the club.

LADIES ; As the Trundell and Burnham Plate matches approach in future weeks, the first such initiative from the Coaches is to offer some focussed sessions on Monday evenings, starting THIS MONDAY May 22nd, from 4 oclock, to the players in the Trundell & Burnham Teams, (or those aspiring to do so in the future). For ease of reference in the future , these sessions will be referred to as the Ladies Academy ! Contact George or Ladies Captain, Liz Baldwin for any further details

APOLOGIES ; from Katie Forman from St James's Place, for having to cancel the informal talk on Inheritance Tax, on Friday night, due to ill health. This will be re-arranged and a new date advertised in due course.

County Mixed Pairs ; Despite the weather that caused other cancellations, Mike Alderton and Hazel Baker played their first round of the County Mixed Pairs on Wednesday evening at Iver Heath. Playing Anthony Roff (Son of the Roffs who were past members and donors of the Roff Cup) and Rachel Edfe, they had a close game in the drizzle, and despite being 12-18 down won the last five ends to win narrowly 19-18. Well done Mike & Hazel, and good luck in the next round (against a pair from Richings Park !) * (apologies for the earlier error, as the pair from Iver Heath who Mike expected to win, and who I referred to initially, were beaten by another from Richings Park)

CANCELLATIONS; The two matches due to be played on Wednesday 17th have fallen victim to the wet weather. We will try to reschedule the Friendly against Rosedale Park to later in the season, and the TVL game against Richings Park is under discussion regarding re-scheduling or sharing the points. Apologies to all those affected, but at least you can put away your wet weather gear!

RESULT ; On Tuesday we entertained Ladygate to a friendly at home, and a very close affair it turned out to be. We managed close wins on three triples, and drew the fourth, but a loss on the final triple allowed Ladygate an overall win by 78 - 75. Well done to Top Rink Mick Lane, with Pam Anderson, and Lyn Carroll, who gallantly stepped up to play at short notice as well as sorting the Teas. Our unbeaten run had to end somewhere, but it was a close thing!

RESULT : Every season we are invited to play in the Bowls England Top Club competitions, and because fixture congestion can be an issue, this year our Ladies entered whilst our Men declined. On Monday the Ladies were drawn away to Iver Heath, always a formidable opposition, and so it proved again this season. Well done to Rose Kirby and Hazel Baker for winning their Pairs match (29-15), and to the Triple (Flora Pam & Candi) who were only narrowly beaten 14-17, but unfortunately Iver Heath proved too strong, and the rain became a factor, in the Single and Fours sections, and whilst we lost overall by 3 parts to 1, we gained valuable experience for the Trundell and Burnham campaigns to come.

RESULT ; On Sunday, we visited Aylesbury Town for a friendly, and having lost in the three encounters played since we started fixtures in 2015, and being 44 -54 down at half way, the "writing was on the wall". However the team rallied well, &.....our winning run continues.! We came back strongly in the second half, to win 4 out of the 6 triples, and 113 - 92 overall. Our Top Rink was Linda James, Tim Timberlake and Allan Rumble (24 - 7).

However, commiserations to Mike Alderton who failed to overcome his opponent from Richings Park in the men's "Champion of Champions" competition on Sunday morning.

On a more positive note, congratulations to Morgan Kavanagh in the County under-25 men's pairs, as he and his partner from Bradwell BC (Milton Keynes) won through their first round match, (15-11) playing at Bradwell. on Sunday.

LADIES GALA ; Aston Clinton have a few spaces left for their Ladies Gala Day on Weds 19th July. Anyone interested, follow this link to their flyer. invitation 2017.pdf

RESULT ; Our first Game in the Three Counties League was played on Saturday at home against Flackwell Heath, and our pleasing run of success this season continued with another win by 103 - 90, winning 3 of the 5 rinks, and taking 8 points to Flackwell's 4. Top Chalfont Rink was Joyce Cripps, Mike Moir, Pam Anderson and Tony Batkins, (28-16).

Archived  1st June  2017

RESULT ; On Wednesday we played Kings Langley at home in a friendly match. Our arrangements with KL are one match per season rotating home and away, but have been beset with problems in recent years, 2014 and 2015 were cancelled (Funeral and Rain respectively) and last year we were beaten 61-102 so it was a pleasure to play in glorious sunshine, against very friendly opposition, and come away with another win to continue our run of success. We won on three out of five triples, and 98 - 84 overall. Top Rink was Rose Kirby, Linda James and Mick lane (31-8).

NOTICE ; The selections for the Trundell and Burnham Plate teams have now been made for ALL MATCHES, and can be found on appropriate tabs under 'Ladies Matches.'

NOTE ; If you put down for Ladygate or Rosedale on 16th/17th May, please refer to changes that have been necessitated by withdrawals and the clash with the TVL game on Wednesday evening. Apologies to those affected, but please contact Tim B if there are problems with the final arrangement. Please also note the access details above the team selection

RESULT ; Our first competitive game was at Chesham in the Chiltern & Thames league on Monday night, and proved a very close contest on a good green, but chilly night. The overall shot count in the three triples was 44 - 44 a draw. However the league points were 2 per rink and 4 overall, which were therefore shared 2 each. So the points result depended on the rink outcomes, and it is good to reveal that we won two of three to take the match 6 points to 4.

Well done to Top Rink Rose Kirby, John Anderson & Tim Baldwin (22-9) and a mention to Rob Kirby, Denise Williams and skip Candi Ivey who secured the score with a single shot victory. Just a couple of further shots away in the wrong place, and 6-4 could have turned into 2-8 !! The unbeaten run continues !

Note ; Please refer to the 'Coaching' tab on this site for the latest tips or advice from the coaches. Look out for an asterisk on the main menu tab when a new item has been added.

Archived  15th May 2017

RESULT  ;  On Sunday we visited Wendover and played a friendly match in warm sunshine on a lovely green, and continued our winning run!  Each team had three winning rinks, but another emphatic Top Rink score of 31-8 , by Rose Kirby, Margaret Timberlake and Tim Baldwin, contributed to an overall win by 117 -85.

A good start to the season, but now the serious games begin with the Chiltern & Thames league against Chesham next week. Good Luck to them !

Note ; Well done to Roger and the green team for another clean sheet from the County 'Starring' group after their inspection of the green last week.

NOTICE ; The Sunday game against Aylesbury Town on May 14th is 6 triples, but was inadvertently posted and picked as 4 triples. John Anderson is looking for more names urgently, so if you held back because there were enough names already submitted, please come forward and contact John a..s.a.p

RESULT ; On Saturday, we played Hazells BC at home. This friendly has a history of close finishes, as three years ago we lost by 3 shots, and last year we lost by 2 shots, and we have rarely, if ever, beaten Hazells ...... until this year !! Despite Chalfont losing on 4 of the 6 triples, our Top rink of Rose Kirby, Joe Jaquest and John Anderson rectified the situation with a 25-4 victory to achieve an overall Chalfont win by a single shot, 94 - 93. Our winning start to the season continues.......

COMPETITIONS ; The draws for the 2017 competitions were made on Friday May 5th, and can be found on the dedicated Competitions page on this website. This will be updated weekly through the season.

100 Club ; The May winning draw was as follows

£25 William Gordon, £15 Bobbie Richards £10 Rose Kirby

RESULT ; The Ladies played their first game if the season away against Denham on thursday. Unfortunately the match had been reduced to two triples (by Denham) but nevertheless it was an enjoyable game which we won comfortably on both rinks, and overall by 49-26. It feels unnecessary to highlight a Top Rink out of two, but for the record, it was Captain-of-the-day Rose Kirby, with Denise Rogers and Hazel Baker. Denham are to be thanked for a fine tea afterwards and we trust that they will be able to raise a full team for the return match.

NOTICE ; St James's Place ; Last season, members put forward some ideas for financial topics they would like information on and Katie Forman has agreed to talk to us about them. Katie, who many of you have met, is our contact from St James's Place, the company which is sponsoring us again this year.

We have arranged four dates, all on Fridays which seemed to work well as many of you will be coming up anyway for the triples competition. The talks will be very informal with opportunities for questions throughout and afterwards, and Katie will stay on in case anyone wants to talk to her more privately. They will start at 4.30pm in the clubhouse and, with the questions, go on until about 5.00 which should give everyone plenty of time to get ready for the Friday Roll-up.
There will definitely be no hard sell, and the first one is on May 19th, on Inheritance Tax, and the various options available for keeping it as low as possible. It will also touch on Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney. There have been a lot of changes in recent years in these areas & Katie will be able to bring us up to date.
The other dates are June 9th - Helping your Children and Grandchildren tax efficiently, including junior ISAs. It will also include items of interest to people without children and more information related to the first talk. July 21st ; Pensions and Later Life Planning (including ways to plan for care fees). August 18th ; - Tax-efficient investments.
RESULT ; Following our result away against Court Park, we played our first mid-week friendly at Home, against Glory Mill on Wednesday. The weather was chilly and threatened rain, but we got away with it. We enjoyed a close match, with our opponents taking a slender lead at half way. However after tea, we improved on all rinks, taking three out of four triples for a win overall by 73-59. Top Rink was Mike Moir, Bryan Hedley & Hazel Baker (25-9). The starting winning 'streak' continues ! An internal triple was included alongside the game, and welcomed new member Sue Patey to her first exposure to the fun of inter-club matches.

RESULT ; The first mid-week game, and first away match of the season, was at Court Park on Tuesday. Historically this has been a hard fixture to win, but this year we must be doing something right, because we came away with a comfortable win , by 97 shots to 68. We had three out of 5 winning triples, with Top Honours going to Candi Ivey with Colin Richards and Robin Newman who started with a six-shot end, and finished 29 - 9.

Due to changes over the years in marking techniques we are running a marking course for those members interested in giving their time to mark singles matches in this year's or future Club Competitions, and urge all such members to take this 'refresher'.

A certificate of attendance will be given to all participants completing the course and your name will be added to the "Official approved Markers List".

Although the first course (29/4) was possible a bit early, and was cancelled through lack of names, please add your names to the clubhouse list for the next date of your choice ; Thursday 11th May at 18.00 or Saturday 13th May at 10.00

If you are unable to make any of these courses please contact George Ivey to arrange an alternative suitable day and time .

REPORT ; The 'Chiltern Tourers' (Allan Rumble's band of players with many from Chalfont in their number) have returned from this year's Spanish trip, and follow this link to a report on their experiences. It is in two parts, as a single pdf seemed to be too big to work properly. A permanent link will also be placed in the page dedicated to Chiltern Tourers on this site. T 2017 SPAIN pt 1.pdf 2017 SPAIN pt 2A.pdf

RESULT ; The second game of the season was again at home to Stoke Poges, and 6 Triples were played with an internal triple alongside to give as many players an outing as possible. The result was another win ( do 2 games constitute a 'streak' ?) by 126 shots to 68, winning on all 6 rinks. Top rink was Bobbie Richards, Graham Buchanan and Tony Batkins, 21-7. We avoided the rain, and our visitors were gracious in defeat, and enjoyed their outing despite the score.

RESULT ; After the game against Uxbridge was called off (by them ), the first match of the season was played at home on Saturday against Rickmansworth British Legion, and we started the season with a win! We won on 4 of the 5 rinks, and by 85 shots to 65. Our Top Rink was Flora Alderton, Colin Richards* and Staff Burbridge (20-12). * apologies for the initial error in naming this group.

NOTE ; Bank Holiday Monday ; Your fixture card indicates a possible event at the club on Monday, but in view of the busy schedule between this weekend and next, and the 'dodgy' weather forecast for the day, no formal event is currently planned. Anyone wanting a roll-up, if enough turn up at 2.00 something can be arranged ! ; Also, remember - Friday Night Roll-ups have started! A good turn out on the 28th kicked off the season, and next week there will be the draws for the Club Competitions. As usual , Players to arrive & Register no later than 5.45 . the roll-up draw takes place at 5.50 pm Play commences at 6.00 pm and the Competition Draws will take place after the baked potatoes !

COMPETITIONS ; Competitions organiser Bob Baker has compiled the lists of entrants for this year. Please check the following link to see that you are entered where you intended, or speak to Bob a.s.a.p. ENTRIES 2017.pdf

Friendly v UXBRIDGE ; Unfortunately our opponents for the first match of the season, away to Uxbridge next week, have found it difficult to raise a team and have cancelled the fixture.

HOWEVER, we had a full team wanting to play, and it is suggested that all those selected, plus any others who might want to join in, come up to OUR green from 14.00 on that day, and Captain-of-the-day Mike Alderton will organise a roll-up game to give everyone some practice. Apologies to all those affected, but this cancellation was out of our hands.

100 Club ; April Winners

The draw for the April prize-winners has been made as follows ;

£25 Staff Burbridge, £15 Finn Burbridge £10 George Ivey

STOP PRESS ; Green opening date has been brought forward;

In view of the current fine weather, and the good state of the playing surface, Green-keeper Roger Darbourne has been approached to open the greens early, and is happy to do so, provided that the outstanding details of preparation are completed. This will be tackled on Wednesday (and possibly Friday) morning, so these are good times to come up and give the greens team a hand. Subject to these works being completed, the greens will open for roll-up play from 1.00 pm on Friday April 14th (Good Friday).

All other organised roll-ups , matches etc , will remain as advertised previously.

REMINDER ; Don't forget the pre-season meeting on Sunday, and apologies for the co-incidence of the clock change to BST. Please set your alarms !! For all those who need replacement paperwork, spare copies will be available on the day.

CLUB SPRING-CLEAN ; Following the various maintenance operations over the winter and the arrangements for the Pre-season meeting, but before the season starts in earnest, the Clubhouse will need its annual spring-clean and tidy-up. Please put the morning of Wednesday April 6th in your Diaries to come up and lend an hour or two to getting your facility up and running. This request will be reinforced at the pre-season meeting, and we hope to get enough volunteers to make it a quick and enjoyable exercise !

SOCIALS ; Bob Baker will expand on this on Sunday, but the following link is for some Trips that are suggested through the summer, and your thoughts and support will be canvassed at the pre-season gathering. Trips Draft.pdf

RESULT ; The final indoor match of the winter took place at Herts on Sunday , where we again took second place to a strong home side. The overall score of 78 - 141 was a tale of two sets of games, three triples where the contest was tight to the end, and three where it was less so. We managed two wins out of the six triples with Top Rink going to Dave Harding, Chris Moir & Tim Baldwin in a game that was tied with one end to go, before a win 16-13, after an exciting final end. A mention also to Rose Kirby, Mike Moir & Staff Burbridge who were also tied with one end to go, and won by a single shot. We will pass over our Captain's rink, where a nasty reverse at the last end cost them their game.

Thanks to all members who played in the winter games, and we now look forward to the summer season.

NOTE ; Members may not know, but a group from the club have played through the last 5 or so winters ( sometimes in the rain, frost, wind ..etc, but mostly in fine weather ) in the Chessvale winter league on Sunday mornings. This season they recorded their best showing for many years, in coming third, and were miffed at not coming higher, as they led the league before two poor results at the end of the season. Well done to the team of Mike & Flora Alderton, Hazel Baker, Pam & John Anderson & Liz & Tim Baldwin.

Chessvale are always looking to reinforce the teams in this league, so anyone interested in next winter, lease see any of those mentioned above.

100 Club ; The winners for March were drawn at the monthly social gathering on Wednesday, and the lucky persons were ;

  • Graham Buchanan £25
  • Tim Timberlake £15
  • Allan Rumble £10

Pre-season Meeting ; Everyone should have received their pre-season paperwork , by email or letter-drop, so any member who has NOT received their information, please contact Tim Baldwin a.s.a.p. (Apologies for the revisions and amendments which proved necessary, but hopefully any confusion can be cleared up on the day....TB)
